Italians will proudly tell you that they have the biggest number of UNESCO World Heritage sites of any single country (true, and admirable, but perhaps also a call to check the Euro-centric viewpoint of UNESCO). Italy itself is a fiercely regional country, where each region, province, and down to the smallest of towns jealously guards its own identity, tradition, history and culture.
