Tinariwen, the Touareg band from Mali, who have achieved massive critical accliam over the last five years - including a grammy winning album Tassili (compiled and mixed by ex-Frames guitarist Dave Odlum), returned in 2013 with the album Emmaar from which this track, Toumast Tincha is taken.
The album, whose title means 'the heat on the breeze' in Tuareg, was recorded in America, in the Joshua Tree national park, featuring guest appearances from the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and Nashville musician Fats Kaplin. Recorded in America primarily, though, because of political instability in the Sahara. Forget the idea of some kind of post-grammy sell-out. This is still music grounded in their tradition and desert home. "The ideals of the people have been sold cheap, my friends,” sings bassist Eyadou ag Leche, in Toumast Tincha, “A peace imposed by force is bound to fail/ And gives way to hatred.”
